Concession 4: We’ll Just Buy More Stuff From the U.S.

Canada’s ambassador to Washington made a statement about Canadians without discussing it with a single Canadian.

According to a recent AP article, Kirsten Hillman has a plan that will appease Trump. The plan is to buy our way out of the tariffs problem. Hillman believes that Canada will be able to appease Trump and offset tariffs by buying more from the U.S.

She suggested submarines and also mentioned that Canada had some big military purchases coming up, which could easily be purchased from the U.S.

A peculiar tactic: buying arms from the very person threatening to annex your country.

She also went on to share some information about Canada that perhaps should not have been shared.

She may have had good intentions when she mentioned that 70% of Canada’s military equipment comes from the U.S. Perhaps she intended to signal, “Hey, look at all this business from Canada that you’re going to lose.”

What she showed instead is that Canada purchases 70% of its military equipment from the U.S.

Hillman later on stated that Canada will do retaliatory tariffs if necessary.

This means that tariffs will be applied in return should the initiative to buy more from the U.S. fall through.

There's something strange about placating someone who's hindering your sales by buying more of their product. It has an air of familiarity.

What is the word I am looking for?

Yes, it’s a concession.

I suppose when you are an ambassador and the media asks you a question, you have to say something.

This wasn’t the right thing to say.
