Uncle Dominic in The House
Earlier this week, I learned that Dominic Leblanc, the new Finance Minister, used to be Justin Trudeau’s babysitter when he was growing up.
Up until he replaced Chrystia Freeland I hadn’t really been paying attention to Leblanc.
Let me rewrite that more transparently. I did not know who Dominic Leblanc was.
Actually, I had not been paying attention to much of anything until I heard about the tariffs. The tariffs made a non-political person instantly interested in political matters.
But back to Leblanc. In the middle of all the craziness that has been going on, I heard Leblanc provide some very wise insight this morning.
He said the following words:
It's not the government's job to respond to everything Donald Trump posts.
This brings a sense of calm to the situation. This reminds us that the trolling is part of the strategy. It’s aim is to:
- Destabilize the country
- Insult and undermine the Prime Minister
- Have us all shaking in our boots
- Make us feel inferior
- Make us, and Americans believe lies
- Turn people against each other
- Instigate a response to him
- Give him the upper hand
- Make people who otherwise wouldn’t pay attention to him start talking about him
- Affect the government policy of a sovereign nation
All this is from a person who is not yet the president. All from Tweets.
These words from Leblanc remind us that Tweets are not policy. Tweets are just tweets.
This is a very level-headed way to look at the tariff threats and the insults that followed them.
So today, I have decided to give Dominic Leblanc the nickname Uncle Dominic.
I mean it in a good way.
I’m not going to worry too much if he likes the nickname or not.
It is highly unlikely that I will ever bump into Dominic Leblanc in the supermarket, or in my neighborhood or anywhere.
Wise words, Uncle Dominic!
